A Hosszú motorozás lefelé című sorozat erről a kalandról szól.

A saját gyerekeimre gondolok.

A magyarul A mi emberünk címmel megjelent Our Kind of Traitor című regényt Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) filmesíti meg Ewan McGregor főszereplésével.

	Ewan McGregort felkérte a Moto Guzzi, hogy vegyen részt a „My Ride, My Pride” nevű kampányában.

A színész élete során eddig néhányat magáénak is tudhatott a legendás, olasz motorkerékpár gyártó gépei közül. A California 1400-ast népszerűsítő reklám kedvéért McGregor a „Son of a Gun” film forgatását függesztette fel két napra.

	Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) és három gyermekük a téli vakációra érkeznek Thaiföldre, előre örülve annak a néhány napnak, amit e paradicsomba illő vidéken eltölthetnek. December 26-án reggel épp a karácsonyi ünnepség fáradalmait pihenik ki a szálloda medencéjében, amikor borzalmas hang hallatszik a talpuk alól, a föld gyomrából, majd hatalmas fekete vízfal zúdul rájuk. A megtörtént eseményeket feldolgozó történet egy család felejthetetlen beszámolója az elmúlt időszakban bekövetkezett legborzalmasabb természeti katasztrófák egyikének pusztításáról. A valóság szörnyűségeit azonban csökkenthetik a részvét, a bátorság és a jóindulat váratlan megnyilatkozásai, melyekkel Maria és családja életük legsötétebb óráiban szembesülnek.

	Ewan McGregor nem másnak, mint feleségének vallott szerelmet a San Sebastián-i nemzetközi filmfesztivál színpadáról.

	Minden szempontból jeles pillanatnak tekinthető, amikor Ewan McGregor a fesztivál történetében először, a legfiatalabb színészként életműdíjat kapott. McGregor persze meghatódott a döntéstől, s amikor fellépett a színpadra, a közönséget is meglepő monológba kezdett.

	"Az első és a második filmem közötti időszakban találkoztunk - kezdett bele a színész. - A karrierem nélküle nem így alakult volna. Ő a feleségem, akit teljes, tiszta szívemből szeretek. "

Jól döntöttem " - mondta a színész.

A The Impossible az USA-ban december 21-én kerül a mozikba.

	John Wells (Vészhelyzet) hamarosan kezdi forgatni a Tracy Letts színdarabján alapuló Augusztus Oklahomában című filmet. Mint korábban bejelentették, a filmben Meryl Streep alakítja majd a sztori középpontjában álló családból a gyógyszerfüggő anyát, akinek meghal a férje, ezért felnőtt gyermekei visszatérnek a szülői házba. A három lánygyerek közül a legidősebb Julia Roberts lesz. Most hozták nyilvánosságra, hogy Roberts figurájának a férjét Ewan McGregor alakítja. A férj egyetemi tanár, aki elhagyta a feleségét egy diákja miatt, de most ő is odautazik az anyósához, hogy támogassa feleségét a gyászban. A filmben szerepel még Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis, Margo Martindale és Dermot Mulroney is.

	2012. március 15-én, a Fórum Hungary forgalmazásában kerül a mozikba A Csokoládé rendezője és a Gettó Milliomos forgatókönyvírójának közös új vígjátéka, amely fő szerepeiben Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt és Kristin Scott Thomas lesz látható. A feliratos előzetes és a magyar poszter is megérkezett hozzá.

	Tartalom: egy dúsgazdag jemeni sejk (Amr Waked) arról álmodozik, hogy lazacokra horgászhasson a sivatagban, mely uralma alatt fekszik. A pénz nála nem akadály, így megbízza egyik üzletkötőjét (Blunt), hogy váltsa valóra álmát. A nem mindennapos feladathoz azonban szükség lenne Anglia vezető halszakértőjére, Fred Jones-ra (McGregor), aki hallani sem akar az abszurd ötletről. Balszerencséjére azonban a külügyminiszter sajtófőnöke (Thomas) nagy lehetőséget lát a sztoriban, és a különös páros hamarosan útnak indul, hogy a lehetetlenből valóság váljon.

	EWAN MCGREGOR IS BEAMING behind the wheel of his rusty 1960-something Volkswagen pickup in the parking lot of The Standard Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. A left and then a fewblocks and then one more left on South Main Street, and he’s at yet another parking lot, this one deserted for the day’s shoot. Still sporting the tailored navy suit and brown tie from the last few frames shot in the hotel, he’s quickly out of the battered VW and ogling one of the day’s props, the photographer’s midnight blue 1964 Mustang, the one with the tiny little side-view mirrors that look like they belong on a dentist’s tray, and the missing “D” on the hood that renders its make “FOR.”

<encoded>
	McGregor’s fondness for motor sports is well documented. A known gearhead, he has twice in the last decade embarked on cross-continental motorcycle trips — one around the northern hemisphere and one down the length of Africa. Both were broadcast as miniseries. On this day, he has his vintage Spanish test bike, another of the shoot’s props, lashed down in the bed of the pickup. He is still grinning when he takes the bike down the ramp, and later when a neighbor leans out a window to complain about its apparent lack of a muffler.

	A day earlier, in the Spanish-style back patio of a Santa Monica café, no muscle cars or motorcycles or other toys in sight, that McGregor smile, the one he deploys with a glance to the middle distance when he makes sort of Zen pronouncements about his life or career, is on frequent display. Somewhere between content and amused, it is what a screenwriter might call a “knowing smile.”

	It’s there when he offers, in his still-detectable Scottish lilt, his take on his family’s move three years ago to Los Angeles: “I always just assumed that I’d live in London forever. But I don’t, and I quite enjoy that.” Or his decision just more than a decade ago to quit drinking: “It was effortless, because it was the only thing I was prepared to give up. I wasn’t prepared to give up my career or my child — I wasn’t about to lose my children...11 years. Easy-peasy.”

	Or artifice in film, a favorite topic of disdain: “I hate scripts that read like other movies....That’s why I’ve never really nailed the Hollywood ‘hard man’ role, because I don’t really believe it. I don’t know guys who have great exit lines every time they leave the room.”

	And later, in a discussion of his long résumé of sex scenes: “I love it when scriptwriters write, ‘They climax together,’ and I go, Oh yeah, really?” McGregor’s is the look of a man at total peace with how much he has figured out. And at 40 — more than half a decade removed from the Star Wars prequels and Moulin Rouge and that moment when there was a chance at all-out global megastardom — McGregor seems to have quite a bit figured out.

	Yes, Ewan McGregor, who made his star turn 15 years ago as a nihilist junkie in Trainspotting, who always seemed willing to wear eyeliner and go full frontal, is 40. Though over tea, he doesn’t quite look it. Los Angeles has rendered his complexion a shade tanner than a son of Crieff, Scotland, should be capable of, and he’s dressed young: light-washed Levi’s, black leather Chuck Taylors and a black T-shirt with an elaborate Rorschach screen print. But when conversation turns to getting his teenage daughter to join the family for a shoot in London last summer, he doesn’t just sound middle-aged. He sounds like any other slightly harassed dad in the subdivision.

	“We can’t really drag her out of L.A. anymore, not with a team of wild horses,” he says with a laugh.

	He’s been married to his wife, Eve, a production designer he met early in his career, for 16 years. The couple have four girls, ranging in age from 1 to 15. Over the years, he’s been largely guarded about his family life, but in conversation, he tends to define himself as much as a father as an actor.

	“I’ve tried very hard to keep them out of the way, because it’s nothing to do with anybody, and it’s not fair on them,” he says. “We have a group of friends where some are in the business, some are not in the business — and all walks of the business: a lawyer, a writer, a director we know — and their kids and our kids are all friends. It’s not some kind of showbiz party around our house on the weekends. It’s far from it. It’s like real life.”

	At times McGregor’s low-key cool and motorcycles and downright sane approach to the fame-family divide seem of another era. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward and Westport come to mind.

	Take, for example, an aside he offers about Haywire, which is in theaters Jan. 20 and is the ostensible reason for our sit-down. Helmed by Steven Soderbergh, the international spy thriller stars Gina Carano as an agent on the run, and McGregor as one of several GQ-ready spooks — played by Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum — who either employ or are out to extinguish her. Soderbergh, McGregor explains, put the cast at the preproduction mercy of a former Israeli special agent, who had them all packing fake blue .9 mm pistols to set the level of paranoia just right.

	“I didn’t take my gun anywhere....I don’t want to be that guy who’s getting drawn on in the supermarket, when I’ve got my kids around, because I’ve got a rubber gun down the back of my pants,” he says, cracking up. “I kind of chickened out of it....Well, I got the point.”

	Getting the point seems to be a McGregor specialty, and why not? He has been working for almost 20 years and has 50-something films to his credit. He is presumably set financially (though he refuses to take the bait when the subject of a back end on Obi-Wan Kenobi action figures is broached: “It wouldn’t be gentlemanly to talk about that”). He’s taken on a variety of work since, including a few that didn’t quite land as intended. If something less than megastardom followed that early-Naughts hot streak, McGregor seems perfectly at ease where he is now. He’s been on a bit of a new streak lately, which started in 2010 with Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer and continued last year with Mike Mills’ terrific Beginners, in which he played an angst-ridden, grief-stricken thirtysomething casting about Los Angeles with Mélanie Laurent and a Jack Russell terrier.

	He has, in short, achieved the sort of work-life balance that would be maddening to the world at large if he didn’t tend to be such a goddamn nice guy about the whole thing. Unprompted, he twice rearranges the proceedings at the café to keep a very pale, very sweaty reporter out of the baking SoCal sun. He pitches the umbrella himself on the second go-round.

	“[It’s] almost unnervingly natural, how relaxed he is,” says Carano. A mixed martial artist by training and a total acting novice before Haywire, she has a unique perspective on the matter.

	“He’s so smart. Everyone else was so excited, and he’s just relaxed and cool and has all the smart, witty things to say, but he’s kind of quieter,” she says, recalling the cast’s first meeting in a hotel. “And then we all went downstairs and I see this guy take off on his motorcycle — the coolest, most antique motorcycle — and it was Ewan. I was like, ‘That’s Ewan McGregor.’ He’s just way too cool.”

	Haywire and Beginners aside, McGregor is moving toward more familiar domestic territory on-screen these days. He’ll play, as he puts it, “a proper dad” in this year’s The Impossible, about a family upended by the tsunami in Thailand in 2004. Despite his being a father for nearly as long as he’s been working, it’s something of a first.

	“It’s nice to feel like you’re working on grown-up films and playing a grown-up person,” he says of the development.

	In March, he’s especially against type as a buttoned-up Scottish fisheries expert in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Lasse Hallström, the Swedish-born director of Chocolat and The Cider House Rules, who worked with McGregor on Salmon Fishing, cites the actor’s “sense of irony” as one of his greatest strengths. “Privately, he has a wonderful sense of humor,” the director says.

	At the café, McGregor considers what’s left to accomplish. He says he’d like to direct, unaware of or, more likely, unbothered by the cliché. But acting, he says, is still an end itself.

	“If every now and again one’s like a step out, that’s fine,” McGregor says of his role selection these days. “I’d like to feel I’m still climbing the ladder, if you like, but at the same time, it’s not the be-all and end-all. Because I’m really happy where I’m at.”

	By now McGregor’s tea bag is on the glass tabletop, and the sun is starting to let up a little bit. It’s the time of day when, one imagines, the dutiful parents of the L.A. metro area line up their cars for the post-school pickup. Or maybe it’s the perfect hour or two to be on a bike, tooling around Southern California. Either way, our allotted time is drawing to a close and McGregor is soon back off to the real world.

	But not without one last bit of insight.

	“Your ambition,” he says with that smile, “can be to carry on doing what you’re doing.”

	It's our annual spring preview, and to kick things off, actor Ewan McGregor dons the blue suit as you've never seen it before. Traditionally, it's the most conservative suiting color—but not when you're riffing on it like this. Our favorite business look for spring is all about piling on the blues, from your suit to your socks and everything in between.

	Hollywoodi film készülhet a háromszoros forma-1 világbajnokról, Sir Jackie Stewart-ról. A Túl a barátságon producere, Bill Pohlad szeretné megfilmesíteni a veterán pilóta és egy fiatal versenyző, Francois Cevert barátságát. A férfi egy amerikai versenypályán veszítette életét 1973-ban egy balesetben.

	A skót versenyző már elolvasta a forgatókönyv vázlatát, és zöld utat adott a projectnek, sőt még tanácsot is adott a készítőknek. Szerinte Pohlad-nek a szintén skót Ewan McGregor-t kellene szerződtetnie az ő karakterére.

<encoded>
	Stewart elmondta – „A kapcsolat köztem és Francois között talán tényleg különleges, hiszen nagyon jó barátok voltunk, miközben keményen versenyeztünk egymással, akkor is, ha egy csapatban voltunk. Ez a történet egy nagyon jó filmesre talált Bill személyében. Dolgozott már néhány nagyon nagy sztárral, és jó barátom. 1971 óta ismerem őt. Meg akarja csinálni, ebben egyetértünk.

	Persze mi nem leszünk benne, arra színészek kellenek. Nem tudom ki játszik engem, de Ewan McGregor eszelős jó választás lenne.”

	Ha a filmszínészeket kérdezzük, melyik volt életük legkínosabb szituációja filmezés közben, elég változatos válaszokat fogunk kapni. Ewan McGregor számára a Velvet Goldmine szexjelenete volt életének ez a pillanata.

	A skót színész ma is fülig vörösödik, ha eszébe jut a Christian Bale-lel forgatott jelenet.

	Az 1998-as Velvet Goldmine című angol-amerikai zenés drámában McGregor rocksztárt, Bale pedig egy újságírót alakít. A film középpontjában a glamrock-sztár, Brian Slade élete és megrendezett halála áll.

	McGregor úgy emlékszik vissza a tetőn folytatott kalandra, mint karrierje legkínosabb pillanatára – írja az HBO.

<encoded>
	„Igen, az emlékezetes szex-jelenet Christian Bale társaságában. Felmásztunk egy tetőre, a stáb pedig egy másikról vette. Meghallottuk, hogy 'Felvétel!' és elkezdtük szép lassan imitálni a szeretkezést. Csináltuk-csináltuk. Egy idő után úgy éreztem, elég volt, szerintem végeztünk. Feltápászkodtam, felnéztem, és akkor láttam, hogy már rég elpakolták a kamerát! Ha mondták is, hogy 'Ennyi!', azt nagyon halkan tehették. Úgy gondolták, hogy mivel ez egy nagyon intim pillanat, egyszerűen csak nem zavarnak minket. Pedig nincs semmi rossz abban, ha jó hangosan odakiáltják, hogy 'Vége'!” – mesélte Graham Norton talkshow-jában.

	A skót világsztár elárulta, hogy egyáltalán nem volt ideálja, amikor megismerte a feleségét 16 évvel ezelőtt.

	Ewan McGregor, a Moulin Rogue sztárja elárulta, hogy amikor 16 évvel ezelőtt megismerte a feleségét, egyáltalán nem volt ideálja. A színész soha nem gondolkodott azon, hogy a leendő párja milyen követelményeknek feleljen meg.

	A skót híresség közel 16 éve él boldog házasságban Eve Mavrakis-szal, de saját bevallása szerint nem tudja mi a titka ennek a kiegyensúlyozott kapcsolatnak. Csak arra emlékszik egészen biztosan, hogy szinte azonnal egymásba szerettek – „Nem tudom mi tart minket együtt. Idén leszek negyven éves, vannak barátaim, akik egyidősek velem, de még meg sem találták a párjukat.

<encoded>
	Sosem volt listám arról, hogy milyen az ideális nő. Nagyon fiatal voltam, amikor megismerkedtünk, és egyszerűen csak beleszerettem. Annyit tudtam, hogy vele akarok lenni, és még most is csak vele akarok lenni.”

	London — Egy négy hónapos kislányt fogadott örökbe Ewan McGregor (40) és felesége, Eve. A párnak ez a negyedik lánygyermeke, saját lányaik, Clara (15) és Esther (9), valamint az öt éve Mongóliából örökbe fogadott Jamiyan után. Az új jövevény nevét és nemzetiségét McGregor nem hozta nyilvánosságra, csak annyit árult el, hogy fogadott gyermekük nagyon jó kisbaba. Bár a Csillagok háborúja Obi van Kenobija ritkán beszél családjáról, most a New York Posttal kivételt tett. – Tudom, sokaknak unalmasnak tűnhet kisgyerekekkel játszani, de én rendkívül élvezem – mondta a színész.

	Ewan McGregorék családja immár négy kislánnyal dicsekedhet, miután nemrég adoptáltak egy márciusban született csecsemőt.

	Csak egy napja derült ki, hogy számos hollywoodi híresség után Denise Richards is beállt az örökbe fogadó sztárok sorába, s máris újabb adoptálásról érkezett hír: ezúttal Ewan McGregor és felesége vettek magukhoz egy kislányt.

	A Csillagok háborúja 40 éves sztárja és neje, Eve Mavrakis immáron másodjára fogadnak örökbe: 9 éves kislányukat, a mongóliai Jamiyant annak idején 4 évesen vették magukhoz. Rajta kívül két vér szerinti lányuk is van: Esther szintén 9, Clara pedig 15 éves.

	Immáron tehát négy kis hölgy boldogítja otthon a skót származású színészt, a legújabb csemetéről azonban egyelőre csak annyit tudni, hogy márciusban született.

	Ewan McGregoron és a szintén a napokban adoptáló szülővé lett Denise Richardson kívül korábban olyan világhírű sztárok fogadtak örökbe, mint Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Meg Ryan, Nicole Kidman, Sheryl Crow, Sharon Stone és Hugh Jackman.

	Ewan McGregor Eva Green oldalán alakít szakácsot a Perfect Sense című filmben, ami egy tudós és egy szakács szerelméről szól egy olyan világban, ahol egy érzékszerveket eltompító járvány pusztít. McGregor egy barátja, Guy Cowan éttermében készült a szerepre, hogy hiteles szakács legyen.

	"Sokszor ő főzőtt rám a forgatásokon, aztán nyitott egy saját éttermet Guy's néven. Nagyon sikeres és jó étterem. Fantasztikus a hangulata, de kicsi a konyhája. Néhány hétig ott dolgoztam nála, egy csomó dolgot tanultam. Amikor gyerek voltam, sokat dolgoztam éttermekben. Mosogattam, meg salátákat csináltam. A Guy's-ban végül csak kisegítő voltam. Lepakoltam az edényeket, és ügyeltem arra, hogy minden munkaállomás tiszta legyen" - mondta McGregor az Angeleno magazinnak.

	Hozzátette, barátja nem kivételezett, folyamatosan üvöltözött vele, hogy mit csináljon, pörgette rendesen a munkát, így a színész jobban átérezhette, hogy nem játékról van szó, amit előállítanak a konyhában, azt tényleg megeszik a vendégek.

	Mr. McGregor, it seems like your motorcycle adventures are beginning to overshadow even your film career.

	Is that right? (laughs) Well, I like being out there. I think if you can encourage people to do something, if it is to go out and explore the world and see parts of the world that you might not otherwise see, and appreciate that people’s lives are very different from ours here in Europe and in America, then I think that is a good thing to do. I am happy to have done that, whether it be the movies, a perfume ad, or the series about my motorbike trips. Do you know what I mean? If they stand for that, then that is good.

	Are the road trips with your best friend your way of soul-searching? Do you reflect about your life and your career while you are on the road for hours and hours?

	It is totally a time for all of that. It is time for reflection, because you sit on the bike for eleven hours a day, so you’ve got a great deal of time to think about things. But it is also a time to stop thinking about certain things and let your mind rest and just ride the bike. And it is a time to explore and encounter people in very different situations than my own. That becomes entirely food for your soul. It is incredibly fulfilling.

<encoded>
	What is the best soundtrack to ride a bike?

	It depends where you are. On the Africa trip we had quite a good system to listen to music all the time, but my taste changes on a daily basis. I think Pink Floyd is difficult to beat when you are on a motorbike. Just lots of Pink Floyd, that’s good. Sometimes my best friend and I just become ridiculous on our bikes. Just dancing and being foolish and enjoying life to the fullest while we listen to loud music.

	Would you allow your children to ride motorbikes?

	Yeah, yeah, of course. I would because then I would teach them to ride. My wife would never allow it, so they won’t. They will probably never ride bikes. But I would teach them how to do it properly. I drive quite safe; I am not a particularly fast driver. I am much more interested in the feeling of it and the relaxing nature of it. If I go out and ride too fast on roads that I am not too familiar with I get in trouble and then there’s fear and that’s not what I want to experience. I drive slowly and I’m quite happy with it like that.

	Do a lot of people recognize you on those trips?

	It depends where I am. But quite often, yes.

	Does it bother you that you can’t escape your fame no matter where you go?

	No. Because I don’t have a problem being Ewan McGregor. I am quite happy being me. I don’t have anything to run away from or escape. I am able, on the whole, to live my life in a fairly normal way other than being away a lot. I’m not mobbed by people or paparazzi. I have a fairly normal time with it. In that respect I am not trying to get away from anything. Getting away from something often implies that it’s a negative pursuit, but it’s not in my case. It is a pursuit that is about taking things in.

	But don’t you meet every criteria to be chased by paparazzi? You are good looking, charming and very famous.

	No. I don’t meet their criteria. I am happily married and have had kids for quite a long time.

	Isn’t that what they are looking for: getting inside looks into private moments with the family?

	No. They are generally looking for actors who are going out with other actors. Someone whose life they can document falling apart. This won’t happen to me.

	That last sentence matches your image as a nice guy.

	Yes, I am a very nice guy. Please write that down and make sure you don’t forget it! (laughs)

	Is that one of the reasons why you are getting so many good parts? People want to work with you because you seem to be so uncomplicated?

	I think it ultimately doesn’t matter to the work. I have worked with really difficult actors who are great on screen but I had a horrible time working with them. There is no rule about it really, in terms of whether the work is good or not. But I think in terms of a human being and going to bed at night and living in this world, your behavior makes a big difference. I wouldn’t want to work and live like that.

	You could live a life like that because people adore you. Somehow it almost became expected for big actors to have a certain arrogance.

	People pay us an enormous amount of money for us to do what we do so I think we should be there on time and do our work. Sometimes the more money they get paid, the less they care about their behavior, that’s true. It is a kind of embarrassing attitude if one thinks that he is the next royal, the next prince or princess of Hollywood. But those kinds of demands are embarrassing to me.

	You never thought that you were Hollywood’s next prince?

	No. And I’ve always been paid very well. Since my first job I’ve gotten paid more money that I could have ever imagined.

	But how do you remain the same?

	I don’t. It is part of human nature to change all the time. It’s just the older you get, hopefully the more you realize which things in life work. You realize which things make you happy and which not. If you keep your eyes open your life becomes easier and clearer with maturity.

	So what is your vision of a perfect life?

	I think the things that make me happy are my family, my work, and my bikes. Those are the things that work for me, so it becomes quite clear. My focus is on those things and therefore I become better in it.

The island’s natural splendor makes it easy to lose track of the fact that you’re at the site of one of the earth’s most devastating natural disasters. Moreover, the resort itself conspires in the bewildering feeling of amnesia—its awe-inspiring trees aren’t even indigenous to the region, but were trucked in from Bangkok to replace the ones the tsunami destroyed just six years ago. McGregor has savored the time he’s spent here shooting The Impossible, a Spanish-financed drama about the 2004 tsunami, without forgetting its recent history.

McGregor jettisoned to international celebrity status with his breakthrough portrayal of junkie-cad Mark Renton in Danny Boyle’s 1996 instant classic, Trainspotting, and has managed to retain it ever since even while churning out films that are the farthest thing from popcorn fare. Despite a move to Hollywood, two reality television shows, and a certain performance in which he uttered the words, “Use, the force, Luke,” he’s generally managed to preserve his indie integrity while maintaining scandal-free celebrity status. In other words, he’s one of the few A-listers in the world who’s never been accused of being an a-hole.

<encoded>

It’s early in the morning when McGregor answers the door of his cream-colored villa, numbered 006, wearing khaki shorts and a sleeveless white tee. Having once seriously contended for the role of James Bond, McGregor shrugs and quips: “I almost made it to 007.”
He invites me in and pours me a cup of coffee. As he hands it to me, I notice the giant dagger-pierced heart tattoo with the names of his wife (French production designer Eve Mavrakis, whom he married in 1995) and three daughters on it. He is excited to be seeing his family when the cast and crew go on Christmas vacation next week.

It’s been a busy year for McGregor—highlighted by the release of the lauded Roman Polanski political thriller, The Ghost Writer, and the gay prison satire/romance, I Love You Phillip Morris, co-starring Jim Carrey. Since August, he’s spent the bulk of his time in Thailand where he’s been filming The Impossible (a working title that will be referred to henceforth as such). Helmed by The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona and slated for a 2012 release, The Impossible tells the story of a vacationing family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of the devastating tidal wave. McGregor stars opposite Naomi Watts (the two also co-starred in 2005’s Stay), and he’s looking forward to his first acting role as a father. Yet what initially drew him to The Impossible was the story’s simplicity and brutality. “There’s a line in the script when Lucas [his character’s eldest son] looks at his mother’s wounds and says, ‘Mom, I can’t see you like that.’ It just devastated me.”
Despite the fact that this is McGregor’s first day off in god knows how long, he’s incredibly present. He listens to questions carefully and after a brief pause for thought, looks me right in the eyes when he responds—so much so that it feels rude every time I turn away to jot down notes. He’s also particularly chipper today: “Not a cloud in the sky. It’s the most beautiful day since I can’t remember,” he says, gazing towards his beachfront view—rich turquoise as far as the eye can see. Apparently, rains have slowed shooting on The Impossible, the skies resembling his native Crieff, Scotland more than Southern Thailand. McGregor has been using the downtime to teach himself how to play the bagpipes.

An antique bicycle leans against the wall, a couple of VW toy miniatures stand on a shelf, and two books rest on the night table next to his bed. Curiously, both are titled Life: one is Keith Richards’ recently published memoir, the other, Life: A User’s Manual. It’s not hard to imagine his assistant unwittingly fetching him the latter and the warm-hearted McGregor keeping it around—even after procuring Richards’ memoir—just to avoid hurting his feelings.
As we finish our coffee he asks me if I’d like to go for a ride.
“Sure,” I say, thinking we’re about to hop on one of his beloved Moto Guzzis.
As we exit his villa, he turns to me and says: “I can’t believe we’ve been talking an entire hour and you haven’t yet asked me what it’s like to kiss Jim Carrey.”

*  *  *

    It turns out The Impossible’s insurance doesn’t cover the actor’s dangerous hobby, so we climb into an SUV and cruise along a winding highway engulfed by trees and wildflowers whose sagging limbs look burdened by all the recent rain. McGregor stares off into the brush wistfully, practically unbothered when a grazing elephant comes into view. “Honestly? I can’t wait to get back to L.A.,” he says.
    McGregor plans to take February and March off just to be at home. “I fantasize about doing the school run, taking the kids to ballet practice, riding my motorcycles.” McGregor’s well-known circumnavigations of the globe by motorcycle with best friend Charley Boorman—once latitudinally, the other longitudinally—were the basis of his surprisingly, well, “real” reality shows, Long Way Round and Long Way Down Twice. But lately, he tells me, “I dress up our poodle Sid with a pair of goggles, put him into a sidecar, and ride about town. People literally hang out of their cars with iPhones taking pictures.” McGregor and his family moved to L.A. a little over two years ago from London, where he got his start. “I always thought I’d live there for the rest of my life, but I think there’s something quite freeing about living in Los Angeles—as opposed to London, which I find constricting.”
    If Los Angeles has been good for McGregor’s state of mind, it’s been even better for him professionally. The move came after the actor’s two biggest flops, The Island (2005) and Deception (2008), and, at least in hindsight, helped get his career back on track. This past year’s The Ghost Writer and I Love You Phillip Morris are among the greatest cinematic achievements in his 17-year career of over 40 films, together representing fertile ground for understanding McGregor’s place in the industry as he turns 40.
    In The Ghost Writer, McGregor plays an unnamed writer who makes a living anonymously producing other people’s memoirs. After a surprise hit penning the life story of a magician, he finds himself hired to complete the memoir of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) who’s been in hiding as the public clamors for him to be brought to justice for the tortures and secret kidnappings that happened under his watch. Ostensibly a morality tale in which the ghost takes responsibility for his increasing culpability in the Prime Minister’s mythology, McGregor’s role also speaks to his versatility as an actor. Just as a ghostwriter figuratively becomes an entirely different person with each film, so too does McGregor.
    Unlike some actors, he doesn’t exploit a formula once it’s proven to be successful, and hence, his roles have very little in common. He’s a cinematic chameleon who cuts across every possible archetype and genre, working with Hollywood pillars like George Lucas and Ron Howard, auteur-types like Polanski or Woody Allen and avant-garde artistes like Todd Haynes and Mike Mills (with whom McGregor worked on the forthcoming low-budget film, Beginners).
     “I like that people think my career is diverse,” he tells me. “But I do think big budget Hollywood movies don’t have the space to explore complexities of life that smaller films do because they’re so financially-driven. If somebody’s going to put up $300 million for a film, they’re going to want it back so they don’t want to put anything in the film that’s going to marginalize anybody. So it becomes harder and harder to make any complex statement or exploration.”
    McGregor’s most impressive recent performance, possibly also his greatest comedic role to date, is that of Phillip in I Love You Phillip Morris. The twisted comedy has his character wooed and won only to discover he’s become tangled in a web of lies. McGregor is quick to give his lead the props: “Jim Carrey can manufacture comedy into moments. When I try, it’s just fucking terrible. What I can do is understand when moments are already funny and play to that.” Think of the slow build to Phillip’s realization that Steven had a fellow inmate beaten to a pulp in his honor, McGregor’s pause and ebullient welling up: “That is the most romantic thing that anyone ever did for me.” Think of the subtle, seemingly unconscious way Phillip touches the shoulder of the hulking black cop standing next to him when he finds out Steven has AIDS. Without McGregor’s Phillip, I Love You might’ve felt like a Liar Liar reboot. But because McGregor so endears his character to us, we can sympathize with him for taking back Steven—and it is our ability to identify so profoundly with Phillip’s suffering (to “love” him), which makes the film’s final twist so powerful.
    I Love You is based on a true story and when McGregor tells me about meeting the real Phillip prior to shooting, I sense an opportunity to talk “process” with him. I ask McGregor how meeting Phillip affected his construction of the character, but he changes the subject and asks me whether I’ve seen Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop. To be sure, McGregor takes his craft very seriously, but it doesn’t usurp his identity the way it might for other actors. Ultimately, he’s a bloke from Crieff who’d rather talk about a French Peugeot 10-speed he re-built from spare parts bought on eBay than speculate on overarching principles of his career trajectory. “I’ve always been very simple. If I read a script and I like the story and characters, then that’s it. It’s difficult to think of a thread through the work.”
    We drive back to McGregor’s resort and head to its seaside Bamboo Bar for lunch.
    “What’s good here?” I ask him, gazing vulture-like at a whole fish sizzling on the grill.
    Taking in a deep breath of sea breeze, McGregor smiles and replies, “What isn’t?”
    A waitress arrives at our table and McGregor orders spaghetti with seafood and a watermelon juice. Lunch feels like a motorcycle trip around the globe as we whiz from an elephant charging at him in Botswana (McGregor mimicking the pachyderm’s wily approach), to his experiences with UNICEF (he’s now an honorary ambassador) in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, and to his observations about the notorious ping pong girls of Bangkok (“It’s basically a talent show for the vagina,” he explains).

*  *  *

    When you call to mind images of the other great leading males of McGregor’s generation, it’s almost impossible to separate them from their iconic costumes: Heath Ledger in clown regalia, Will Smith in a black suit and Ray-Bans, Johnny Depp in pirate getup—but for McGregor, his trademark look may very well be nakedness. (Call to mind Brad Pitt’s most iconic moment as Tyler Durden in Fight Club and at least he’s wearing jeans.) McGregor’s done the full monty routine in Trainspotting, The Pillow Book (1996), Velvet Goldmine (1998), and Young Adam (2003). His propensity to expose himself is so part of his show biz identity that a joke about his character’s “huge talent” in Moulin Rouge (2001) pays off with greater dividends.

Sex and sexuality have always been connected with McGregor’s persona—especially expressions which push against societal and cinematic convention. The comic Louis C.K. has a bit about never having had a single gay inclination in his life, but still wanting to blow Ewan McGregor: “Jesus Christ, he’s fucking gorgeous. I just catch myself daydreaming… I wanna fuck the shit out of his face.”
    I’m thinking about all of this because McGregor has just pulled down his shorts. He’s changing into a pair of Diesels during our photo shoot with him. It is at that moment that I realize that if nothing else comes out of this interview, at least I’ve learned with utmost certainty that I am, in fact, straight.
    I crack a joke about all the cameos his wiener has made and, characteristically, he philosophizes: “It’s all about life. We’re naked at the end of the day and we’re sometimes naked in the middle of the day—if we’re lucky. It’s just part of life.” He sits down on the beach and continues his train of thought: “It started with Pillow Book. When Peter Greenaway was casting me. He said, ‘You’d have to be naked. Do you have a problem with that?’ [I answered], ‘No.’ ‘Simulated sex with a woman?’ ‘No.’ ‘Simulated sex with a man?’ ‘No.’ The rest, as they say, is history.”
    I ask if he ever fears his work will be cheapened by it being associated with the sexually shocking.
    “In reality, sex is awkward messiness and if you can somehow communicate that awkward messiness then, I think, it becomes more shocking in its mundaneness,” he replies.
    McGregor cites a scene in Young Adam in which a petty domestic squabble arises between his character and one played by Emily Mortimer, who comes in from the rain and is angered to find that her under-employed lover has spent the day making custard. Stripping off her wet clothes, the argument heats up and transforms into an incredible custard-filled love scene: “It’s really mad!” McGregor exhorts. “He grabs a cane from the fireplace and starts smacking her with it. It’s brutal, yet properly erotic. Yes, it’s graphic sex, but there’s something else going on in it.”
    He elaborates: “It may seem like I’m obsessed with sex, but it’s actually the opposite. I’m not very interested in watching people have sex; that’s why it’s so important to do something honest and true if you’re going to do it at all. In Young Adam, for instance, the sex scenes are used to chart my character’s moral decline. That’s why it’s important that they get more and more unusual as the film moves forward.”
    McGregor rubs his chin pensively: “I’m getting older and the actresses stay younger. I don’t want to become Clint Eastwood, where his love interest is 50 years younger than him. You never want them [the female co-stars] to feel like you’re taking advantage of the situation. Anyhow, sex scenes are terribly exposing and rarely of any use in learning about character.”
    I resist the urge to cue the violin as recent co-stars Scarlett Johansson, Michelle Williams, and Eva Green traipse through my mind.
    “And the directors are always pushing you in these really strange ways, saying, ‘Let’s just see where it goes,”’ he adds. “I like it when the sex is more choreographed, like, ‘Let’s first roll over and think out every move like it’s a dance routine.’ Then, it’s somehow easier to do.”

    It strikes me that McGregor’s attitudes towards sex scenes are representative of his attitude towards the creative process, in general. Despite his predilection for arthouse fare, acting is not a wandering, subjective exploration, but a purposeful fulfillment of the drama he inherits from the page. When the Flaunt photographer asks McGregor to pose with an old book he’s been reading about how to play the bagpipes, the actor resists. In hindsight, McGregor wasn’t just being difficult—he just didn’t understand what such a photo would communicate. Over the course of our shoot with him, McGregor showed an incredible willingness to do just about whatever it took—climbing rock formations, trees, jumping into the sea, running along the edge of algae-infested pool in a nearby abandoned hotel—to get the photos we needed. For the actor, concocting an elaborate truth is always easier than telling a simple lie.

*  *  *

    From the looks of things, the recent rains have kept the tourists away, which suits McGregor just fine. We have the jagged shoreline and its little inlets almost entirely to ourselves. The breeze has cooled and a fiery sunset has begun to appear in the horizon. We climb a few giant limestone rocks in our path, the waves of the Andaman crashing against them and then receding. From behind a Casuarina tree, a 10-foot high Buddha smiles, embedded within a cliff. I realize I’m probably one of the few people in the world with some sense of what it’s like to be stranded on a desert isle with Ewan McGregor.

As we walk along the beach, McGregor’s eyes keep coming back to the horizon. He points in the direction from which the tsunami came and says, “I can’t wrap my head around the thousands of deaths.” Since August, he’s met so many people who have lost family and loved ones, but who still remain optimistic. He tells me about a friend he’s made named “Jing” who lost his entire family to the disaster and now runs a bar, poignantly named “Memories,” that McGregor likes to frequent on weekends. “It’s always on your mind when you’re here. Everywhere you look reminds you of it. You’re swimming and you’re thinking: ‘This is the scene.’ But ultimately, it’s beautiful here. It’s like being in New York after 9/11. You can still enjoy New York, right?”
    It’s impossible to fathom that such wondrous beauty could also be the source of such devastation and misery. But the tsunami changed everything here. It added new meaning to the Thai people’s perpetual, nervous giggle. It makes it hard to look at those limestone rocks jutting out from the beach and not think of tombstones. Or to look at that Buddha’s face staring towards the sea and not find his smile tragic-comic.
    A silence comes over us.
    “You’re not going to ask me what it was like to kiss Jim Carrey?”
    “What was it like to kiss Jim Carrey?” I reply.
    “It was very nice to kiss Jim Carrey,” he says. “Firm, gentle, and prickly.”</encoded>
